A Maryland caregiver will spend a year behind bars after she was seen in a disturbing video slapping an elderly woman in the face and striking her with a cell phone.
Roxann Bucchan-Straker, 48, was sentenced Thursday after she pleaded guilty to abusing her 95-year-old wheelchair-bound patient in November 2015.
According to WJLA, the victim was living at the Springvale Terrace Retirement Home in Silver Spring. Bucchan-Straker, a registered medical technician, had been hired to care for the woman.
The victim’s son suspected Bucchan-Straker was hitting his mother so he set up a hidden camera in her room.
In the footage, the caregiver is seen setting a plate of food down in front of the woman before slapping her in the face.
At another point in the video, Bucchan-Straker yells at her patient for not eating her food fast enough.
“Eat,” the caregiver says as she hits the woman again.
Bucchan-Straker is also seen thumping the woman twice over the head with her cell phone.
“You’re supposed to eat, that’s what you’re supposed to do,” she says.
Bucchan-Straker, a mother of two, told the judge in court Thursday that she had been under pressure at work and in her personal life, WUSA reports. She said she was “ashamed” over what happened.
“It strikes me as unfathomable. It really is a situation where someone that was hired to care for them [an elderly person], instead abused them,” a spokesman for the Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy told the outlet.
In addition to her one year prison sentence, Bucchan-Straker was given three years probation.
